| Three elements that constitute the garden: Plant, Soil, and Rock Programmes |
| Environmental Training & Art Learned from Gardening |
| For children, I believe, playing with nature all around them fosters their creativity. I launched the group 'FOREST FARM' to provide children with the chance to cultivate their appreciation and basic understanding of the natural world. Three adults and three children have been offering workshops and developing the programmes. The nearest bit of nature, the most accessible 'forest' to us is our own garden. |
| 001 Moss Ball |
Sphagnum moss in a round field is used as the main material for raising plants in hanging baskets. I started with this as I wanted children to see that plants are living things just like we are. It stretched from wild plants to gardening seeds, enabling children of 4 or 5 of age to adults to enjoy this. |
| 002 Grass Bonsai |
After enjoying the moss ball for 2-3 months, this plan continues the pleasure by putting it in a pot. This is done by simply putting the moss ball in some soil and taking care of it. It is a little forest, a table garden in your room. |
| 003 Vegetable Arrangements |
This plan aims to enjoy the vegetables grown in your garden a bit before you eat them. Of course, the ingredients used are based on "eating" them. Both vegetables and flowers have their own beauty as you view them one by one. In the photo at left, these are soybeans, broccoli, and hot peppers respectively. |
| 004 Garden Tree Arrangements |
Create Ikebana using the plant refuse from maintaining your garden. Before just tossing it out as refuse, try enjoying the beauty of the plant one more time. This kind of flower arrangement doesn't have many flowers, but you can still get a lot of pleasure from it. |
| 005 Dried Flower Arrangements |
This programme plays out in the fall and winter garden. It is the Zen world of using withered flowers, fallen leaves and the branches of trees. Plants that have finished producing their pretty flowers are also very beautiful. You can enjoy their natural color and form. |
| 006 Miniature Landscapes |
In this miniature landscape program, starting from "creating a small garden with children", there are many different patterns you can enjoy, such as bases of garden stones, grass, or flower garden . These can be used as a kind of therapy in a medical facility and this use is spreading. |
| 007 Cards of Pressed Leaves |
This programme was conceived of in the interest of making the beauty of a plant reappear. A hint for doing this is to look at the form of each of your plants one by one and make them as simple as possible. It takes about a week to press the leaves before they are ready to look at, but if you add a message, they can be used as postcards. |

| 008 Garden Art Photos |
The basic cycle of plants begins with the appearance of buds, the flowers bloom and it all ends with the production of seeds. It is really beautiful at times. If you lend a hand and take a photo of Nature's original art, this too is a full-fledged art. |
| 009 Garden Art Drawings |
Time spent sketching the very plants that you've grown in your garden is a fulfilling pastime. This programme is "observing the form of a plant, studying its color and composing it with your own design skills." Garden art can be thought of as a two-dimensional garden. |
| 010 Fallen Leaf Art |
If you hold up a leaf to the sun, it is really beautiful. This programme runs from Fall to Winter and we make birds, insects, fish, etc from fallen leaves. The shape of a leaf that a bug has eaten from creates a good atmosphere. |
| 011 Tree Insects |
We make insects out of dried up, fallen branches or thick cuttings from pruning. Unique, new bugs can be made by skillfully using the color of bark and twigs. Children can take part in this programme when they are old enough to use a saw, about 12~13 years old. |
| 012 Tree Animals |
Conceived as a sequel to the Tree Insects, more adults than children participate in this program. Because of the feel of the natural materials, they can be enjoyed indoors as interior decoration. Once you learn how to cut, it is surprisingly easy to do. |
| 013 Field Scope |
We make a kaleidoscope out of small flowers, seeds, sand, etc. It has got to be the smallest garden I can think of . As it is possible to change the contents, you can enjoy each of the seasons. Children can join in from 4~5 years old.

| 014 Training in Rock Play |
This programme is structured as a 4 page picture book with rocks printed in it. This programme is enjoyed by, starting from one rock, meeting chums, giving names and thinking of a story, and stimulating the infinite imagination of children. |
| 015 Rock Friends Step 1 |
The first step is to use eye stickers and finish it with a black pen. Children can enjoy various art forms, all borne from one rock, using paints and glues according to their ages. |
| 016 Rock Friends Step 2 |
In this programme, several rocks are glued together and assembled. By mastering a little technique, many people can enjoy this. |
| 017 Fossil Making |
This programme makes fossils of nuts, leaves and seeds using play-dough. Although can enjoy them by just letting them dry naturally, children also gladly participate in the process of baking them with a frying pan. |
| 018 Friends of Soils Step 1 |
This is a programme for playing with clay dough using cookie cutters. This process can be enjoyed as if you were making cookies, or you can create patterns with paints and so forth. |
| 019 Friends of Soils 2 |
Once the foundation is covered, participants work on their pieces freely. The key point is how to draw eyes, but if you have a little trick up your sleeve, you can make a nice job of it. |
| 020 Picture Book |
As I anticipated, there were not many people who could understand starting an environmental training programme from a garden. However, the major publishing house, Shogakukan, has made it possible to publish a book on the rock programmes. If it is at all possible, I would like to simultaneously present this programme and create a garden in UK. |

| YANO TEA's WORKSHOP (PROGRAM 013, 014) |
Tuesday August 26th 2003 2-5pm
ORIEl WASHINGTON GALLERY
Penarth, S. WALES, UK |
Normally, workshop consists of 10-50 people. However, we limited the number to five women and children when we conducted a workshop in Wales to start.
The object of the workshop was that participants learn the importance of nature while enjoying and creating artwork based on our original nature study starting from a garden. Children who participated in the workshop later said to us that they enjoyed learning about the importance and beauty of plants through the activities. |
| We are developing the programme for people of all ages, supported by special publications. |
