| The basic structure of the garden will be based upon the letter H and hiragana, Japanese characters. My aim with the garden is to represent the world of Zen, recapturing the natural landscape in an accessible way. Three feature trees will be positioned within the garden and the natural sunlight will be reflected upon the wall with a stainless steel mirror. For the ground, I will use soil composted with an environmentally friendly special fermentation technology, recently developed in Japan. The polyphenol property in the soil helps to decompose antioxidants into the ground, so it will be a good base to grow edible plants, such as herbs. |

The famous 18th century landscape architect, Lancelot Brown, more commonly known as Capability Brown, is one of the founding fathers in landscaping. He reconstructed the idea of garden as somewhere to 'nature' and extended the concept to the design of the whole landscape. He set the trend for British natural gardens and created 'man-made nature' in disguise. Having visited gardens and national parks in Wales, I have found there are many similarities between the natural landscapes of the principality and Japan.
The United Kingdom is a country with a strong tradition of conservation through such organisations as the National Trust, who have had such remarkable achievements. The UK also provides a supporting environment for the growth and development of environmental bodies and institutions, within the public and private sectors. In a country with such a rich cultural, environmental and historical heritage, there is so much for me to learn through this wonderful opportunity presented to me as an exhibitor at the Chelsea Flower Show.
It will also help to deepen and enrich my vision of 'creating a forest within the city'. After visiting Elan Valley in Wales, I have since immersed myself in the traditions and history of the indigenous English oak woodlands, I strongly recognize the immense possibilities for my garden projects within the UK.
I look forward to meeting gardeners from all over the world and presenting a neo-Japonism which manifests the unique essence of Japanese traditions within the strictures of today's environment and modern way of life. |
